What Clothes Do You Wear White Water Rafting?

What Kind of Clothes do you Wear White Water Rafting?

Whitewater rafting is a popular sport in the United States, particularly in Colorado. With the rise in boating and outdoor water sports, many newcomers are unsure of what to wear or bring on a whitewater rafting trip. Here's what to wear while white water rafting for first-timers.

Dress Appropriately for the Weather

Know before you go! Before going to the river, make sure to check the weather forecast. The single most crucial aspect to consider while choosing your clothes or gear for a day of whitewater rafting is the weather.

The time of year you go will have an affect on how you dress, just as it will with any other activity. A chilly spring day early in the season may necessitate more clothes than a trip in the middle of the summer. This time of year, renting or buying your own wetsuit can be a good idea. If you're unsure, ask an expert. If the water is still below 77 degrees, you'll need a wetsuit.

If the water temperature is 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) or warmer, you probably don't need a wetsuit. Any temperature below 77 F or 25 C you should wear a wetsuit, especially during the morning, evening, and windy conditions.

It's usually a good idea to bring your swimsuit with you and wear it under your other clothing. You'll be glad to have some garments on that can dry rapidly no matter what the weather is like. Consider swim leggings or swim jammers (a long length bike short) for quick-dry comfort and sun protection.

Wear Proper Shoes

It's critical to put on footwear that allows you to stay on your feet and grips well in damp circumstances. In the summer, a simple pair of sports sandals with a heel strap, a water shoe, or an old pair of light tennis shoes should suffice. To keep your feet as warm as possible in the cooler months, wear close-toed shoes with wool socks. If you don't have the appropriate footwear, most rafting companies will rent or sell you neoprene wetsuit boots.

Wear the Right Clothing

Cotton clothing, according to most rafting experts, has a tendency to become wet and stay wet. Wearing lightweight clothing that doesn't hold water, such as nylon, lightweight wool, fleece, polyester, poly/lycra, or any waterproof or quick-drying fabric, is ideal. If you think you'll be out in the sun most of the day, wear a long sleeve rash guard or sun protective clothing with UPF rating. 35-50+ is best.

ALWAYS wear a lifejacket or (PFD) personal flotation device at all times. Always keep your lifejacket on and ensure you're wearing it correctly. Wear a helmet at all times, too.

What NOT to Bring When Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafter experts will tell you to avoid wearing or bringing the following items:

1. Flip-flops, clog style Crocs™, or boots / shoes with stacked heels
2. Clothing with a lot of weight, such as trousers, leather, or cotton sweaters
3. Clothing that doesn't stretch, or is too tight or restricts movement.
4. Valuables such as jewelry, keys, smartphones, and wallets
