Paddle Boarding for the First Time: What to Do

So you're going to try paddle boarding? Great! Paddle boarding is a fun way to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise. But before you head out on the water, there are a few things you should know. In this blog post, we'll cover the basics of paddle boarding so you can hit the water with confidence.

What is Paddleboarding?

Paddle boarding is an outdoor activity that involves standing or kneeling on a board and paddling with your hands to move through the water. Paddle boarding, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) Paddle boards can be used in rivers, lakes, or oceans, and they come in a variety of sizes and shapes to suit different needs. For example, racing paddle boards are long and slender to minimize drag, while surfing paddle boards are shorter and wider for stability when waves are present.

Getting Started with Paddle Boarding (Basics)

The first thing you'll need to do before you can start paddle boarding is to buy or rent a board. If you're not sure whether paddle boarding is something you'll stick with, renting is always a good option. Once you have your board, it's time to hit the water!

When you're first starting out, it's best to choose a calm body of water like a lake or river. The ocean can be more challenging due to waves and winds, so it's best to wait until you have more experience before heading out into open water.  Paddle with a friend and take into account these important safety measures first.

Once you've found your perfect SUP spot, it's time to get on your board. Here are some tips:

  • Start by kneeling on your board. Once you're steady, slowly stand up one foot at a time until you're in a standing position.
  • Once you're standing, place your feet shoulder-width apart for balance.
  • Lean forward slightly and grip the paddle with both hands, keeping your arms straight.
  • Begin paddling with long strokes through the water to move forward. Remember to switch sides frequently so you don't get too tired on one side!
  • If you need to stop or turn around, simply plant the paddle blade in the water and use it as a brake.
  • When you're finished paddling for the day, carefully step off the board back into the water. Make sure to rinse off your board and yourself with fresh water as salt water can damage both over time.
  • Last but not least, don't forget the sunscreen! Even if it's cloudy out, UV rays can reflect off of the water and cause sunburns. Even better, wear light weight a long sleeve rash guard with 400-50+ UPF protection.
  • Paddle boarding is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while getting some exercise.

By following these tips, you'll be able to hit the water with confidence and have a great time doing it! So what are you waiting for? Get out there and give paddle boarding a try. With a little practice, anyone can do it. Just remember to start slow, stay balanced, and protect yourself from the sun! Happy paddling!
